If, as is likely, Eliot and Osbert Sitwell recognised themselves in this hostile portrait of “poets who like to be men about town, men about town who like to be poets,” neither was unduly concerned. Both were committed to living beyond their means in the pursuit of pleasure. Hedonism and aestheticism were their natural values and, under the guise of robust het-erosexuality, married women their confidantes. The difference between them lay not only in talent but in fortune; in his pursuit of a single social life apart from Vivien, Tom was forced to amuse himself largely at other people’s expense, in contrast to Osbert, who could borrow on the security of Reninshaw, his future inheritance. But Tom, the handsome poet-about-town, was a welcome guest in many salons, and in the Rothermeres he had the good fortune to find a couple whose patronage linked the worlds of literature and dance: the press baron Rothermere was as devoted to dancers (Alice Nikitina, a Ballets Russes dancer, was his mistress) as his wife was initially to her lion cub Tom at the Criterion, and in the late 1920s would become financial backer of Diaghilev’s company.15
